Polyurethane (PU) is a polymeric plastic material that finds its origin in Germany where it was invented in the 1930’s by Otto Bayer and his co-workers at I.G. Farben - Leverkusen. Via so-called addition polymerization using urethane bonds, a diversity of polymer chains can be linked together resulting in a variety of possibilities to influence all kinds of properties of the final plastic material (stiffness, hardness, density, chemical resistance, etcetera). The further development of polyurethane foams made the outlook of usage almost unlimited. Nowadays polyurethane materials can be found in applications as building & construction, automotive, transportation, furniture & bedding, packaging, paint and varnishing, textiles & fibers, electronics, footwear and many more. A major part of use is as a foam. Next to flexible foam (furniture, bedding), polyurethane rigid foam (PUR) plays a key part in insulation and construction industries.
After her foundation in 1968, Nestaan Holland started the production of polyurethane rigid foam blocks in moulds. The demand for insulation materials grew rapidly under the pressure of the oil crisis in 1973 and the increasing energy costs. It was impossible to keep up with the demand while producing discontinuously in moulds.
As a solution Nestaan built a completely new factory in Tholen in 1993. We started the continuous production of rigid polyurethane block foam. In the past one block was made every quarter, currently we can produce one block every minute.
In the new factory, pentane is used as blowing agent which is CFC and HCFC fee. Others followed our production method since then, but in 1993 it was very progressive.
The main advantage pentane offers in regards to the older blowing agents like freon, is that it doesn’t effect the ozone layer. This is known as ODP=0 (Ozone Depletion Potential). The effect pentane has on the global warming is marginal; the GWP (Global Warming Potential) is only 0,11.
Nestaan cares about her customers, but also about the environment.
Every day Nestaan is implementing the newest techniques to meet the growing needs and demands.
The different possibilities of rigid block foam in sizes, densities as well as specific characteristics, make polyurethane rigid foam ad ideal product for a wide spectrum of applications.
Nestaan has an average of 10.000 m3 block foam in stock in order to react fast and flexible to the market.
